A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

Possible reasons and solutions:
1. SQL Instance Name, local computer name is wrong or possibly have been typed wrong (for Instance that on local system):
---- Solution: you may check the name of instance and local computer name
2. Address resolution of remote domain is wrong or not in well format (remote instance that is deployed at another physical location):
---- Solution: remote address domain resolution for server name is: IPAddresofRemotePhysicalServer\Instance name

Example scenario:
A pyhsical server on 200.0.0.222 Static IP (sql server port setting is not behind NAT)
SQL Instance Name: NebraskaSQLR2
SQL Server name field: 200.0.0.2\NebraskaSQLR2

Note: you may try to ping IP address via command prompt first to verify network route accessibility to the remote physical server



2. SQL Server Instance is unreachable on same machine or remote physical server: SQL service can not be started.
---- Solution: Open SQL Server Configuration Manager and check the instance that you tried to connect. If it seems has been started, right click on instance name (instance names are listed in right pane) and select -start-.
3. instance name is not listed in SQL configuration manager:
---- Solution: you may try to reinstall the SQL with selecting -named instance- in install options instead -default name-.

Some other notes: When you try to connect with SSMS, server name is checked first. Due to that, reasons described above are proceeding authentication error messages. If you select authentication method wrong, you should be getting this error message still since instance is not found out. That error indicates a issue mainly of a instance unreachable issue.
