Mart 1, 2010 by

In this linux article, we will be looking how to redirect to a file in linux shell.

Following command is used to list contents.

nevada@stargate21c: ~/test$ ls -l > 1.txt

Output is as follows:

nevada@stargate21c: ~/test$ ls -l
total 4
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nevada nevada 31 Oct 5 11:25 1.txt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nevada nevada 0 Oct 5 11:25 andromeda
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nevada nevada 0 Oct 5 11:26 jupiter
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nevada nevada 0 Oct 5 11:26 vega
nevada@stargate21c: ~/test$ ls -l > 1.txt
nevada@stargate21c: ~/test$ cat 1.txt
total 0
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nevada nevada 0 Oct 5 11:26 1.txt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nevada nevada 0 Oct 5 11:25 andromeda
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nevada nevada 0 Oct 5 11:26 jupiter
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nevada nevada 0 Oct 5 11:26 vega
nevada@stargate21c: ~/test$

In above example, we did a "ls" and redirected its STDOUT to a file.
